VOLUNTEERS are the heart and soul of Cowichan Community Policing & Engagement Society.
Without the commitment and dedication of the Volunteer team we would not be able to offer our valuable programs and services.
We are always looking for Volunteers to join us at the Community Policing Office. What do you like to do? What drives you? What is your passion?
We offer a variety of volunteer opportunities & experiences in many different areas including:
- Speed Watch Program
- Office Ambassadors
- Block Watch Captain/Co-Captain
- Free Friendly Phones Callers
- Events
There’s something for everyone!
Speed Watch
Pairs of volunteers are seen at different spots all over the community with the Community Policing van and reader boards. They are there to help drivers become more aware of the speed they are traveling with the end goal of reducing speeding and keeping the neighbourhoods safe.
Speed Watch Volunteer responsibilities include:
- Two hour initial training session.
- Conduct a Speed Watch deployment twice a month (each deployment is 2 hours). This is done in pairs & we are happy to pair you up.
- Attend monthly general meetings.
Keep an eye out for our Volunteers out on deployments in your area or give us a call at one of our 3 offices to find out more about the program and what you can do to prevent speeding/unsafe road use!
Block Watch Captain / Co-Captain
Community residents on a “block” or adjoining blocks come together to get to know their neighbours, take ownership of the area, and learn how to keep their eyes & ears open for crime/suspicious activity in their area.
Block Watch Captain/Co-Captain responsibilities include:
- Contact neighbours to join the Block Watch.
- Create a Map and Participant List of participants.
- Organize at least one meeting per year with participants.
- Communicate with participants via phone or e-mail fan-out.
Everyone that’s part of Block Watch has their part: Community Policing & Block Watch Society of BC provides training & materials, Captains & Co-Captains host meetings and disseminate provided crime prevention & current news literature, and everyone (including neighbours/participants) do their part to look out for & report suspicious activity to the correct outlet.
Office Ambassadors
Do you like being social and helping others? Come be the face of one of our Community Policing Offices!
Office Ambassadors work in the office to help answer questions in person and over the phone, give directions, provide information & resources, and listen to community concerns.
Office Ambassador responsibilities include:
- Answering the phone and greeting visitors in a friendly professional manner.
- Help provide resources and support for community members.
- Office Administration as needed.
- Commitment of four hours per month (each office shift is only two hours).
If you are responsible, friendly, empathetic, and have a positive attitude, we would love to have you join our Volunteer team.
