Be Visible Be Seen Be Safe…! Pedestrian Safety
North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP are reminding motorists and pedestrians to be safe on the roadway this month as the days become much darker.
RCMP officers and the Cowichan Community Policing and Engagement Society have been out hitting the streets with the help of ICBC road safety coordinators, to hand out over 1500 reflectors to pedestrians in the Cowichan Valley. Between October and January, pedestrian fatalities increase by an average of 54% in BC. It’s important that pedestrians and cyclists wear bright, visible, reflective clothing and that drivers pay extra attention.

Pedestrian safety is up to all of us. We’re reminding road users to be extra alert during the fall and winter months, as visibility and weather conditions worsen,
said Colleen Woodger, local ICBC road safety coordinator. When driving, focus on the road, avoid distractions and be ready to yield to pedestrians – especially at intersections. As a pedestrian, always use designated crosswalks, make eye contact with drivers and try to be as reflective as possible.
